If your site is a Wordpress site, there are plenty of automated plugins that can cut out the middle man. This of course, will only work if you market the advertising yourself.

I personally use wpadsmanager for one of my sites and it works great. It's completely automated.

The amount you can charge depends on the traffic you are getting. If you are not recieving much traffic, you can't expect to have much folks interested in buying your ad-space for over $20. But if it is a high traffic site you can charge more. People will use Alexa to check your traffic rank.

X2 on this. Some forums charge a ridiculous amount for banner ads. I've spent hundreds of dollars on just one ad in the past to end up not even getting one click. Since I do web hosting, it's a gamble even if people do click the ads and go to my site. There's no guarantee that I will get any sort of ROI on the banner ad.
