I've never sold adverts on my site, but it's something I've recently and seriously been thinking of doing this year as a money earner. I'm particularly thinking about banner advertising. Does anyone have any experience with their site/s in that area? If so, how did you attract people to advertise? And how much do you charge?

I've only had experience in banner advertising on one of my websites and I actually decided to use companies like AdBrite. AdBrite pretty much manage the entire process for you which makes it easier on you in that you don't have to worry about installing advertising servers and attracting users to advertise. AdBrite allows the user to sign up, pay for the banner and have it displayed on your website immediately, without any intervention from you. Perhaps the biggest perk is that they'll add your website to their directory so that people can find your website and advertise without ever visiting your website! AdBrite also determine the best price for advertising on your website based on your websites traffic, this gives you the best chance of finding people to advertise on your site.
Once your site gets a little more popular, you'll be able to take over the process yourself.

Hmmm... I was thinking of selling banner space on a couple of my sites but that explanation of AdBrite sounds a whole lot easier. I'm going to go check that out. For some reason, I was under the impression that AdBrite was an Adsense alternative but with banner ads, I would be able to run both on the same site. At least, it would be okay with Adsense - I'll have to confirm that it's okay with AdBrite first.

AdBrite certainly is a lot easier, however I'm not sure if you're able to place adBrite ads on the same page as Adsense ads, or vice-versa. Handling all your advertising through one company such as adBrite certainly has it's advantages though.

I haven't considered using AdBrite, but I'm wondering if Google pushed those sites that featured its competition further down in the search engine rankings. I know it's unscrupulous, but we all know how Google can be.

Tim, like yathinkso, I thought AdBrite was very similar to Adsense. I didn't actually know they did banner ads too. I also thought AdBrite wasn't that popular anymore. Seems I was wrong. Will check the site out. I'd like to have banners in place by the end of next month so need to start researching.
yathinkso, have you found out from AdBrite if you can use it with Adsense? / WriteStuff, that's a thought. Can Google do that?

How much traffic do you get to your site?

I get between 300 and 350 visitors to my site per day, sometimes a bit more than that. It's not a huge amount, but I don't think I'm making the most of it on the monetizing front, hence the banner advertising consideration.
