I know that Google ignores meta-tags at this point but I've heard some of the other search engines still pay attention to them, so I've continued to put them in. I have not tested this to see if it really makes a difference and would love to hear from someone who has. Do you use meta-tags? Why or why not?

What meta tags are you referring to specifically? Obiously they still look at the keywords and description tags? What tags is Google ignoring?

I've taken some recent courses where the consensus is to put meta tags in but not devote much time to them. I list just a few meta tags for those other search engines just in case, but I spend almost no time doing so.

I still use some for my personal site which does fine in the rankings but we have never used them for the business sites (they also do fine). I wonder if its a random rumor that they are useless??

No, it's not a random rumor, at least not for the keywords meta-tag. Google itself states, " Google doesn't use the "keywords" meta tag in our web search ranking". You can find more about that here. The description is still where they pull the info for the search results page, as far as I know, but does not help with ranking like it used to.

Wow! I didn't know that Google ignored the keywords meta tag! I'm certainly not going to spend much time on them in the future!!

I have found with google that metatags and all that key word stuff helps very little. You need to advertise and get real traffic comming to your site. I think doing all that work with SEO stuff will only be a tempory boost for your site. It all helps but advertising and forum posting is the way to go.

I figure it doesn't hurt to put in all the meta tags anyway because Google isn't the only search engine that will crawl your site. Granted, it gets the most searches but there are still a lot of people who still use other engines. Might as well cater to them, as well, since it really doesn't take more than a few minutes to make sure.
